Despite the research showing acupuncture is one of the most effective therapies for pain management, only 1.7% of Americans use acupuncture per year (NIH study from 2022). There is a great need for interdisciplinary collaboration between doctors and acupuncturists.

To expand this conversation, I was invited to provide this Continuing Medical Education (CME) lecture for doctors and other medical professionals given at the 2024 OPAT conference (Oregon Opiate Prescribing, Pain Management, and Addictions Treatment Conference) as put on by Lines for Life (www.linesforlife.org). My purpose is to explore the science of acupuncture in modern language, help doctors recognize a good patient referral, build trust between acupuncturists, doctors, and patients, and help policy makers understand how to build a better health care delivery system.

Doctors are busy. I get it, but acupuncture has been shown to be effective for many pain conditions and patients report ‘added benefits’ rather than side effects with an improved quality of life. There’s more to pain management than pills, some surgeries can be avoided, and physical therapy works better with real acupuncture. Dry needling is only a tiny fraction of what acupuncture is and isn’t it better to have your ‘cake and eat it too’?

We explore the science behind acupuncture. And you might just agree that it is extremely interesting. Acupuncture has been hidden in myths and misconceptions for far too long. The opiate crisis drags on and patients need more solutions. The research shows that acupuncture can help. With better communication, the biological mechanisms of acupuncture can help more people. Not only that, with increased collaboration, the science shows that the principles of acupuncture will contribute to the development of the next generation of biotechnology and electroceuticals.

John Rybak is a biologist, clinical acupuncturist and in the process of completing his doctoral studies.

Everyone is encouraged to review the references to this paper presentation: https://wellbridgeclinic.com/references-for-acupuncture-in-pain-management-a-pathway-to-interdisciplinary-collaboration-in-oregon/
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/TJc3BSxB0q4/default.jpg","https://i.ytimg.com/vi/TJc3BSxB0q4/mqdefault.jpg","https://i.ytimg.com/vi/TJc3BSxB0q4/hqdefault.jpg","https://i.ytimg.com/vi/TJc3BSxB0q4/sddefault.jpg","https://i.ytimg.com/vi/TJc3BSxB0q4/maxresdefault.jpg
{"@type":"Organization","@id":"https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1NssDgMnX-Szx52sc-J_fQ#Organization
https://yt3.ggpht.com/ytc/AIdro_nEDOUsDPFdZGq5nzZwUTQRz2Dar0qNZRX34r4VOtNDvg=s800-c-k-c0x00ffffff-no-rj
@type":"ImageObject","@id":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJc3BSxB0q4#VideoObject_publisher_logo_ImageObject
@type":"SeekToAction","@id":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJc3BSxB0q4#VideoObject_potentialAction
[[{"@type":"InteractionCounter","@id":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJc3BSxB0q4#VideoObject_interactionStatistic_WatchAction
@type":"WatchAction
@type":"InteractionCounter","@id":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJc3BSxB0q4#VideoObject_interactionStatistic_LikeAction
@type":"LikeAction
@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"VideoObject","@id":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSddchIGNG0#VideoObject
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSddchIGNG0
The secret to how the body works: Biologists explains bioelectricity | Michael Levin and Lex Fridman
Lex Fridman Podcast full episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3lsYlod5OU
Please support this podcast by checking out our sponsors:
- Henson Shaving: https://hensonshaving.com/lex and use code LEX to get 100 free blades with your razor
- Eight Sleep: https://www.eightsleep.com/lex to get special savings
- LMNT: https://drinkLMNT.com/lex to get free sample pack
- InsideTracker: https://insidetracker.com/lex to get 20% off

GUEST BIO:
Michael Levin is a biologist at Tufts University working on novel ways to understand and control complex pattern formation in biological systems.

PODCAST INFO:
Podcast website: https://lexfridman.com/podcast
Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/2lwqZIr
Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2nEwCF8
RSS: https://lexfridman.com/feed/podcast/
Full episodes playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrAXtmErZgOdP_8GztsuKi9nrraNbKKp4
Clips playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrAXtmErZgOeciFP3CBCIEElOJeitOr41

SOCIAL:
- Twitter: https://twitter.com/lexfridman
- LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lexfridman
- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lexfridman
- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lexfridman
- Medium: https://medium.com/@lexfridman
- Reddit: https://reddit.com/r/lexfridman
- Support on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/lexfridman
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ZSddchIGNG0/default.jpg","https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ZSddchIGNG0/mqdefault.jpg","https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ZSddchIGNG0/hqdefault.jpg","https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ZSddchIGNG0/sddefault.jpg","https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ZSddchIGNG0/maxresdefault.jpg
{"@type":"Organization","@id":"https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJIfeSCssxSC_Dhc5s7woww#Organization
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJIfeSCssxSC_Dhc5s7woww
Lex Clips
Clips from the Lex Fridman podcast. This year’s conference is unique in that it has two acupuncturists presenting on this crucial topic. If there’s one thing that’s been missing from this crisis it is acupuncture as an integrative approach. My purpose here at the conference is to expand the conversation and actionable tools for providers, policy makers, and patients in the effort to provide better care for pain management, addiction prevention, and addiction recovery.Acupuncture has been hidden behind bias for decades. Over 50 years of research into the mechanisms of action have shown fascinating prospects of how acupuncture can be integrated to provide care for multiple health conditions including pain and addiction therapies. These are the references of my presentation given at the Oregon Conference on Opioids Other Drugs Pain and Addictions Treatments for Lines of Life in 2024.I’m here to provide a high level review of evidence based acupuncture mechanisms of action and how this medically relevant therapy can be implemented on a broader scale. It’s important to note that in 2022 a National Institutes of Health survey showed that only 1.7% of Americans utilized acupuncture therapies. My purpose is not to say acupuncture is the complete answer to pain management, opiate alternatives, addiction prevention and addiction recovery. Rather, my purpose is to raise awareness of a tool that is frighteningly underused and subjected to disproportionate bias.I fully acknowledge that the acupuncture profession has not communicated its value in evidence-based terms using modern physiologic terminology. You are invited to use these references as a jumping off point to better understand the evidence base, cost savings, implementation models, and opportunities for integration and collaboration amongst a greater field of medical professionals. In doing so the evidence indicates that not only do patient outcomes improve but patients also report an improved quality of life with acupuncture care.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.25.0″ _module_preset=”default” link_font=”||||on||||” ul_font=”||||||||” ul_font_size=”18px” ul_line_height=”1.6em” header_font=”Exo|900||on|||||” header_text_color=”#822631″ header_font_size=”45px” custom_padding=”5px||||false|false” header_font_size_phone=”35px” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]ReferencesAlberts B, Johnson A, Lewis J, et al.
